RESUMO

PURPOSE: Variations in nasal wall anatomy are crucial in patients with dentofacial deformities undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy. These structural variations heighten the potential for complications during surgical procedures. Hence, the study focused on evaluating the differences in the lateral nasal wall anatomy across different skeletal Classes. METHODS: This study evaluated 86 patients aged 18-43 years with different skeletal Classes. In the axial images acquired from coronal sections, two angulations and the linear distances of the lateral nasal wall were measured in Class I, II, and III patients. The measurement between the piriform opening and the most anterior point of the greater palatine foramen was evaluated in three parts regarding the osteotomy line. Differences between the skeletal patterns were analyzed using an independent sample t-test and Mann-Whitney U test with a significance level of 0.05. The intra-class correlation coefficient was calculated for inter-observer and intra-observer agreement. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference between Class I and Class II subjects regarding the anterior lateral nasal wall (p = 0.011) and anterior nasal thickness (a) (0.004). There was a significant difference between Class I and Class III patients regarding anterior nasal thickness (a) (p < 0.001) and total lateral nasal wall length (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: For instance, the measurements of Class III and Class II patients were relatively different from those of the Class I patients. Therefore, preoperative Cone-Beam Computed Tomographic analysis should be performed for each patient prior to Le Fort I osteotomy to ensure that the procedure is performed safely.

Objectives: This retrospective study aims to analyse alveolar and palatal process pneumatisation and their relationships with sinonasal variations using cone-beam computed tomography. Material and Methods: The study included 500 patients aged 18 to 87 years, involving 1000 maxillary sinuses with cone-beam computed tomography scans. We examined the relationship between inferior maxillary pneumatisation and the following anatomic variations: Haller cell, concha bullosa, paradoxical concha, bifid concha, and septal deviation. Results: Among the 1000 maxillary sinuses assessed, we found 223 (22.3%) with alveolar process pneumatisation (APP), 37 (3.7%) with palatal process pneumatisation (PPP), and 23 (2.3%) with the presence of both APP and PPP. Significant relationships were observed between the Haller cell (P = 0.005), nasal septum deviation (P = 0.000), and middle concha bullosa (P = 0.01) with APP. However, there were no significant relationships between the paradoxical middle concha (P = 0.07), bifid middle concha (P = 0.74), and APP. Similarly, significant relationships were observed between the Haller cell (P = 0.001), paradoxical middle concha (P = 0.009), bifid middle concha (P = 0.000), and PPP. However, there were no significant relationships between concha bullosa (P = 0.799) and PPP. Additionally, we found significant relationships between the Haller cell (P = 0.003) and the presence of both APP and PPP. Conclusions: This study provides an anatomical basis for imaging diagnosis by investigating the frequency of inferior pneumatisation of the maxillary sinus and its relationship with certain sinonasal variations.

In this study, we aim to evaluate the quality of life in patients with Class III deformities after orthognathic surgery. A total of the 40 patients (26 female and 14 male) were included. The mean age of the patients was 24.85. Patients' ages ranged from 20 to 36 years. All patients received orthodontic treatment before surgery. Sagittal split ramus osteotomy was performed for single jaw patients. Le Fort I osteotomy and sagittal split ramus osteotomy was performed for double jaw patients. Patients completed the Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-14) and Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) three times. [Preoperatively (T0), 1st week after orthognathic surgery (T1) and in the 6th - 12th months after orthognathic surgery (T2)]. There was a statistically significant difference in the dimensions of OHIP-14 when the preoperative (T0) score, postoperative 1st week (T1) score and postoperative 6th - 12th month (T3) score are compared among themselves except for psychological discomfort, physical disability, and handicap. OQLQ total score and preoperative (T0) score was greater than the postoperative 1st week (T1) score and the postoperative 1st week(T1) score was greater than the postoperative 6th - 12th month (T2) scores except oral function. When single jaw and double jaw surgeries were compared, no statistically significant difference was found between OHIP-14 and OQLQ total scores for preoperative, postoperative 1st week, and postoperative 6th - 12th months. When both OHIP-14 and OQLQ scores were examined after orthognathic surgery, the OHRQOL of patients with Class III dentofacial deformity improved significantly.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the quality of the posts about wisdom teeth on Instagram in terms of patients benefit. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The #Wisdomteeth hashtag was searched on Instagram. The first 200 posts were reviewed. 50 posts were included in this study. Upload sources were categorized as health care professionals, health companies and individuals users. Post types were categorized as patient's experience, educational and scientifically erroneous. The posts were evaluated under eight titles for evaluating the usefulness score. The usefulness scores of the posts were classified as poor, moderate and excellent. Kruskal-Wallis test and Chi2 test was used for data. Significance level was accepted as P < 0.05 RESULTS: The usefulness score was between 0 and 2, with a mean of 0.16. There were no statistically significant differences between upload sources and usefulness score (p = 0.328). There were no statistically significant differences between the usefulness score and the number of comments (p = 0.126). CONCLUSION: The results of the study showed that Instagram posts do not contain reliable information for patients.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this prospective clinical study was to investigate the effectiveness of binaural beats and music at a frequency of 432 Hz and compare which method is more effective for reducing preoperative dental anxiety in impacted third molar surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety patients were randomly selected to the binaural beats group, music group and control group. Visual analog scale used to evaluate dental anxiety before the local anesthesia in the first measurement. Local anesthesia was applied to the all patients. Patients in the music group listened to 432 Hz tuned music using earphones for 10 minutes. Patients in the binaural beats group listened to binaural beats using earphones (for the right ear, 220 Hz and for the left ear 210 Hz) for 10 minutes. No special treatment was applied to the patients in control group. In the second measurement, dental anxiety was measured again in all three groups. For analysis of differences between three groups was used One way Anova and Kruskal Wallis test. RESULTS: Twenty seven male and 53 female patients included the study. In the first measurement, the same level of anxiety was recorded in all three groups. (p = 0.811) There was a significant decrease in anxiety in both the binaural beats and music group in the second measurement. (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Binaural beats and 432 Hz tuned music are a valid non pharmacological adjuvant to reduce dental anxiety in impacted third molar surgery. They have a positive effect to reduce the dental anxiety

PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective study was to compare the effects of a surgical tube drain with kinesiologic tape (KT) application on postoperative complications such as trismus, swelling, and pain after impacted third molar surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center, randomized study included 90 patients divided into 3 groups. After impacted third molar removal, 30 patients were treated with a tube drain (drain group), 30 patients were treated with KT application (KT group), and 30 patients were treated with a routine surgical operation and no extra procedure (control group). RESULTS: A total of 29 male and 61 female patients were included. Mouth opening was greatest in the drain group over a period of 7 days. Patients in the control group had more pain than those in the drain and KT groups. No statistically significant difference was found in terms of pain and swelling between the drain and KT groups over the 7-day period of the study. The tube drain was found to improve patients' quality-of-life compared with the KT and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although the effects of a tube drain and KT in terms of pain and swelling were similar, the tube drain was more effective in reducing postoperative complications.
